Background of the study
Libraries have emerged as unconventional yet impactful venues for conflict resolution and peacebuilding. In Maiduguri Metropolitan Local Government Area, libraries serve not only as centers for learning but also as platforms for community dialogue and reconciliation. Through organized forums, peacebuilding workshops, and conflict resolution training sessions, libraries contribute to creating safe spaces for dialogue and the exchange of ideas (Yusuf, 2023). These initiatives are designed to empower community members to engage in constructive conflict resolution, promote understanding, and reduce societal tensions. The role of libraries in this regard is supported by their neutral positioning and accessibility, making them ideal for hosting events that encourage peaceful conflict management. However, despite the potential benefits, challenges such as limited resources, security concerns, and low community participation may hinder the full realization of these programs (Amin, 2024). This study appraises how libraries in Maiduguri contribute to conflict resolution and peacebuilding and explores avenues for enhancing their effectiveness in fostering community harmony (Zainab, 2024).
Statement of the problem
While libraries in Maiduguri have initiated conflict resolution and peacebuilding programs, their overall impact remains inconclusive. Inadequate funding, sporadic programming, and limited community outreach hinder these efforts. Additionally, security issues in the region pose significant challenges to organizing large-scale peace initiatives. These constraints have led to underutilization of libraries as catalysts for community reconciliation. This study seeks to identify these challenges and propose strategies to amplify the role of libraries in promoting peace and conflict resolution (Bello, 2023).
